How freelancers can destroy your business?

How freelancers can destroy your business?

Bob is all set with the business idea, the business model is carved, and a to-do list is ready. He is waiting to execute an idea. The first step is to design a flawless website. With a small start and a low budget, he finds a freelancer with few clicks on the internet. Freelancer gets his brief and starts doing the needful. While the business owner pays in advance, the freelancer uses his creativity and knowledge to deliver the said results. Bob is not happy with the end results and then asks to do something extra. Freelance says “no” as it will cost extra. They have an argument. Freelance clicks “project delivered” and the end. Bob never hears from the freelancer again. While panic posting, Bob writes a bad review.

Bob finds another freelancer. Briefs and this time he is more careful. The new Freelance tells him that the old freelance has done a technical mess. And that he will have to fix it. On and on it goes until it leaves Bob fed up, and frustrated. Sounds familiar? Many startup Entrepreneurs or small business owners do these mistakes.

Whether to hire a Freelancer or not is a question in itself. When it comes to freelancers, many people out there have some good or bad experiences.

But what are the real pitfalls of hiring a freelancer?

Since many articles talk about why Freelancing is good, let’s talk about the other side of it!

Accountability: It’s easy to find a freelancer but what about accountability, and reliability? The platform you hired a freelancer from, will not take responsibility for the deliverables. Just like Bob in the example above, there is no guarantee that the freelancer is going to deliver the project the way you want. Since there is no standard when it comes to pricing and revisions, it’s difficult to define the extras and their costs.

There are also many fake accounts on these platforms that one needs to be aware of. Scams are not uncommon, though many platforms do have strict policies. However, again, the issue of accountability is still not resolved.

So the question arises, is there any platform that guarantees the expected delivery? What is an option for Freelancers? Since a small business does not have a budget to hire a full-time employee and if they decide not to work with freelancers, then there should be something in the middle. The good news is that, yes, there is an option for freelancers. One can subscribe to a virtual full-time employee on monthly basis, without hiring. To know more, read here.

Technicality: Many project owners have no idea how things work technically which makes it very difficult for freelancers to explain the technical issues that are arising. This hampers the delivery and the end result. For project owners who have no technical background, the project seems simple and they don’t understand why they are asked to pay extra. The underlying work that is required takes more hours of the freelancer and creates a lot of tension and friction between the freelancer and the project owner.

This also results in panic posting. When the project owner seems to be unhappy with the delivery, he gives a bad review to the freelancer and, forever goes on with his bad experience on the particular site.

Cheap is expensive – With the hope of not spending more, small business owners and startups always look for cheaper options and end up paying a small amount of money to the freelancers who do not have adequate knowledge due to which they completely mess up with the project which later costs a huge sum of money to fix. This is one of the very common mistakes that every small business owner or startup has made at one or the other point. Hence to conclude, Cheap is expensive, it really is!

Privacy & Identity Theft – The contacted person claims to be a freelancer you chose to work with until you realize he has no adequate skills that he claimed he had. Instead, you found out he was not the freelancer you chose in the first place. Instead, he holds all your information and requirement details. Also keeping data secure while working with freelancers is also one of the biggest concerns when it comes to working with freelancers. There are many tools in the market that do serve the purpose, however, loss, theft, and the misuse of files and information are very common in this industry.

Apart from the points discussed above, there are many more concerns like incomplete setups, miscommunication, missed deadlines, low-quality outputs, etc that should be considered before hiring a freelancer.
